Belgian Beer Café Melbourne is very please to announce the arrival of Delirium beers to our permanent tap range. The Delirum range is a testament to Belgian brewing excellence and they are renowned worldwide for their distinctive flavours and iconic pink elephant logo. We will rotate seasonally through Delirium's diverse range, featuring in turn Tremens, Nocturnum, Argentum, and Red. Each beer offers a unique tasting experience that captures the essence of Delirium's innovative approach to brewing.
Delirium Tremens
Delirium Tremens is perhaps the most famous of the Delirium lineup, often recognized for its striking ceramic bottle and the whimsical pink elephants adorning its label. First brewed in 1988, this Belgian Strong Ale has garnered numerous awards and accolades, including being named "Best Beer in the World" at the 2008 World Beer Championships.
At 8.5% ABV, Delirium Tremens boasts a robust yet approachable flavour profile. The beer pours a pale golden colour with a dense, frothy white head. Its aroma is complex, featuring notes of green apple, banana, and a hint of spice from the yeast. On the palate, Tremens offers a harmonious blend of fruity esters, sweet malt, and a peppery finish, all balanced by a subtle hop bitterness. The effervescence from the high carbonation adds a refreshing crispness, making it a delightful choice for any occasion.
Delirium Nocturnum
For those who prefer a darker brew, Delirium Nocturnum provides a rich and complex alternative. Introduced in 1999, Nocturnum is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale with an ABV of 8.5%. This beer is the perfect companion for cooler evenings - hello Melbourne winter - or when seeking a more contemplative drinking experience.
Nocturnum pours a deep mahogany colour with a creamy tan head. Its aroma is inviting, with hints of caramel, dark chocolate, and roasted malt, complemented by subtle notes of dark fruit such as plum and fig. The flavour is equally layered, offering a blend of sweet malt, toffee, and a touch of molasses, balanced by a gentle bitterness and a warming finish. The complexity of Nocturnum makes it an excellent beer to savour slowly, allowing its intricate flavours to unfold with each sip.
Delirium Argentum
Delirium Argentum, introduced in 2014 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Delirium Tremens, is a unique take on the American IPA style. With an ABV of 7%, Argentum is lighter in alcohol compared to its Tremens and Nocturnum counterparts but no less flavourful.
This beer pours a bright amber colour with a thick, lasting white head. The aroma is vibrant, featuring a bouquet of citrus, pine, and floral notes from the hops, alongside a touch of malt sweetness. On the palate, Argentum delivers a balanced combination of hoppy bitterness and malt backbone. Flavours of grapefruit, orange peel, and a hint of resinous pine dominate, with a crisp, dry finish that makes it highly refreshing. Delirium Argentum showcases the brewery's ability to adapt and innovate while maintaining the quality and complexity for which it is known.
Delirium Red
Delirium Red is a departure from traditional beer styles, offering a fruit-forward Belgian Strong Ale with an ABV of 8%. Launched in 2011, this beer has quickly become a favourite for those seeking a sweet and tart drinking experience.
Delirium Red pours a deep ruby red colour with a pinkish head, immediately signalling its fruity nature. The aroma is dominated by cherry and cranberry, with underlying notes of almond and a hint of tartness. The taste follows suit, with a burst of ripe cherry and red berries upfront, balanced by a mild acidity and a touch of sweetness. Despite its fruity profile, Delirium Red maintains a smooth and clean finish, making it a refreshing and enjoyable beer.
Delirium has something to satisfy every palate. As you explore these beers, you'll not only enjoy their unique tastes but also appreciate the artistry and tradition that goes into every bottle. We are starting of with both Tremens and Nocturnum as part of our continued celebrations of Belgian National Day on July 17th.
Santé! Proost! 🍻
